Optimal design and performance evaluation of tuned mass damper inerter in building structures

This paper concerns the numerical performance evaluation of multi-degree-of-freedom systems equipped with Tuned Mass Dampers-Inerter (TMDIs); a passive control device used for mitigation mechanical vibrations induced by dynamic loads. The inerter is commonly to increase apparent mass classics tuned dampers (TMDs), improving its seismic performance. To evaluate TMDI action, three case studies are employed, determined from real buildings Medellin city low, medium high rise (30 meters, 97 and 144 respectively). Optimum design parameters found using metaheuristic optimization based on differential evolution method, first, minimization horizontal peak displacements, then, root mean square (RMS) response displacements. Besides, assessed eight accelerations records representative literature. Finally, evaluated each study considering different levels inertance device: 5%, 20%, 50% respect total building, which it observed better behavior when TMDIs lower values implemented.
